The folbfrilns i r ‘ ‘ ‘ *] 1111, 1^ ■I-1 1 1 i| Vol. 47 VII Loulsburg College Phi Theta Kappa Attends/National / ; Convention Members of the Louisburg Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, (national scholastic honor fraternity), recently attended a national convention in Washington, D.C. Those attending included Susan Miller, president, Denise Ayscue, Ronnie Goswick, Eric Caresen and Clara Frazier, advisor. The focus at the convention centered around the educational seminars that were offered. Some of the more interesting seminars included a transfer one on scholarships, for Phi Theta Kappa members and several guidance aids in “Life on a new campus.” There were several forms of entertainment such as the Bucho County College Swig Sing:ers, U.S. Navy Band, and a musical political satire. Two afternoons were set aside for tours of the National Art Gallery, the Lincoln memorial and Georgetown. Former U.N. Ambassador Jeane Kirkpatrick, was one of the speakers. For the final banquet, the theme “the Character and Climate of Leadership,” was explored. At the final award banquet, individuals and chapters were accepted and acknowledged. The session ended on Sunday, March 27 and all Louisburg participants agreed that they were able to share in new goals for the betterment of Phi Theta Kappa on the college campus. ROBERT HOBGOOD IS COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER College Whistlers Win National Competition * Staff Judge Robert Hobgood is the Commencement speaker for Louisburg College’s gradua tion ceremony on the morning of Saturday, May 14,10:30 a.m., in Holton Gymnasium, He is a graduate of Louisburg High School, UNC- Chapel Hill and UNC-School of Law. He has served on the Board of Governor’s of the N.C. Bar Association, 1978-81, and served on the Board of Directors of the UNC Law Foundation, from 1978-81. In 1979, he represented the Franklin and Johnston counties by serving in the House of Representatives. Among other thmgs, he has taught at Louisburg College, served in the Korean War, and currently serves as Senior Resident Superior Court Judge of the Ninth Judicial District. m Judge Robert Hobgood Mike deVente and Pat Riley by Michael Suits Mike deVente and Patrick Riley of Louisburg College won first place in the 15th annual National Whistlers Convention, teenage division, on Saturday, April 23, in the Louisburg Courthouse. They competed against teenagers from all over the nation and against local favorite and past children’s and teenage champion Amy Rose. Both agreed that they were very surprised at die outcome. “We competed to have fun, and we did,” they said. deVente and Riley won the popular category by per forming their rendition of “So Happy Together,” by the Turtles. They also won first place in the Classical Division with the “Barber of Seville” by Rossini. For their efforts, diey received three trophies, .ribbons, prize moi^ey and a chance to compete at the International Whistler’s Convention in .Carson City, Nevada. They practiced together for three weeks prior to the contest.
